UK Private Housekeeping Careers: Salary, Skills, and Where to Find Jobs

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to work behind the scenes in one of the UK’s most beautiful homes? If so, you’re not alone. A lot of people are drawn to the idea of private housekeeping, but few actually know what it involves.
It’s not just cleaning. It’s not hotel work. And it’s definitely not for everyone.
But for the right person, it can be an incredibly rewarding, well-paid, and satisfying career.
Over the years, I’ve worked with housekeepers all across the world, from super yacht housekeeping stews, to those working in luxury private residencies across London, the Cotswolds, and the UK. I’ve seen what works, what doesn’t, and what separates a good housekeeper from a great one.
If you're curious about whether this path could be right for you, here’s what you should know.
What’s it really like?
Working in a luxury private household means becoming part of someone’s home life. You’re trusted to care for the space where they live, entertain, rest, and raise their families.
This isn’t just about keeping a house clean. It’s about maintaining an environment that feels calm, ordered, and beautifully cared for.
Your duties might include:
Daily and deep cleaning of high-spec interiors
Caring for fine fabrics, designer wardrobes, antiques, and artwork
Managing laundry and wardrobe rotation
Polishing silver, cleaning fine china, and caring for specialist surfaces
Keeping household supplies well-stocked and organised
Preparing guest rooms, assisting with events, and sometimes offering light service
Helping with packing or unpacking for travel
Pet care or light childcare, depending on the household
Every home is different. Some are very formal, with a full team of staff. Others are warm and busy family environments where you’re the quiet organiser behind the scenes.
Either way, discretion and attention to detail are essential.
What makes private housekeeping different?
It’s a good question. And the truth is, private housekeeping is a world apart from commercial or hotel cleaning.
Let’s look at a few key differences:
Standard Housekeeping | Private Household | |
Setting | Hotel, commercial, or agency work | Inside private homes or estates |
Pace | Fast and routine | Slower, detailed, bespoke |
Standards | Good | Very high |
Relationships | Minimal interaction | Trusted member of the household |
Pay | Around £23k–£26k | £33k–£90k+ plus perks |
In luxury households, you’re trusted to care for things that are irreplaceable. You need to know how to clean silk without shrinking it, how to organise a wardrobe seasonally, and how to set a table properly for lunch versus dinner.
It’s more than a job. It’s a craft.
The upsides (and the honest truths)
Let’s be real. There are some incredible upsides to this work. But there are also things to be aware of.
The good bits:
You’ll work in beautiful homes with amazing interiors
Salaries are strong, especially if you have specialist skills
You often have a good level of independence
In live-in roles, accommodation and bills are usually included
There’s real satisfaction in knowing you’ve made a home feel cared for
Things to think about:
In live-in roles, it’s easy for boundaries to blur
You may be working alone, which can feel isolating in rural placements
The role can be physically demanding and repetitive
Some homes have very high expectations and little flexibility
Your best work often goes unnoticed, and that’s okay
If you’re someone who thrives on calm, order, and high standards, you’ll likely love it. If you need lots of social interaction or variety, it might not be the best fit.
Live-in or live-out?
This depends on the location and the lifestyle you want.
In places like the Cotswolds or the Home Counties, live-in jobs are common. Many include a private cottage or flat, sometimes even use of a car. These can be lovely setups, especially if you like the peace and quiet of the countryside.
In cities, most roles are live-out. You go home at the end of the day, which gives you more privacy and balance. You might earn a bit more too, since accommodation isn’t included.
Neither is better than the other. It’s just about what works for you.
Where are the jobs?
You’ll find opportunities all over the UK, but here are the main hotspots:
London – areas like Chelsea, Kensington, and Hampstead
The Cotswolds – lots of demand for live-in housekeepers
Surrey, Buckinghamshire, and Berkshire – country estates and large family homes
Oxfordshire, Hampshire, Cheshire, and parts of Scotland – especially where there are larger estates
These roles often aren’t advertised publicly. Many families prefer to work with trusted agencies who can vouch for candidates and offer discretion.

What kind of salary can you expect?
This depends on your experience, the job location, and whether it’s a live-in or live-out role.
Here’s a general guide:
Level | Salary Range |
Entry-level | £33,000 to £45,000 |
Experienced | £45,000 to £60,000 |
Senior/Head | £60,000 to £90,000+ |
Some jobs also come with perks like accommodation, meals, bonuses, or use of a vehicle.
If you're skilled in multiple areas like childcare, cooking, or managing other staff, your earning potential goes up.
What are employers really looking for?
You don’t always need formal training. But you do need the right mix of experience and personal qualities.
Experience that helps:
Private households
Luxury hotels or yachts
Valeting, laundry, or service roles
Training that adds value:
Food hygiene
Specialist cleaning
Wardrobe care and packing
Etiquette and service
Personal qualities that matter:
Reliable and trustworthy
Quietly confident
Able to notice the small things
Calm and professional
Strong communicator
Respectful and discreet
Proactive without overstepping
If you have all of the above, you're already ahead.
Is this the right path for you?
This isn’t just a job. It’s a lifestyle. You’ll be trusted with people’s homes, belongings, and routines. You’ll often work alone, and you’ll need to take pride in the small details most people overlook.
But it’s also a career that can be deeply satisfying. You’re making a space feel peaceful, clean, and cared for. You’re helping people live more comfortably. And for many housekeepers, that’s incredibly meaningful work.
If this sounds like something you’d enjoy, I’d love to hear from you.
